Part-time English Instructor position open

September 26, 2007

The College Connection Program (C2) is searching for a dynamic secondary level English teacher to inspire a small group of extraordinary students from across Philadelphia's public school system.

The College Connection Program is an exciting opportunity for highly-motivated 9th grade students who currently receive the White-Williams Scholars monthly stipends which are based on the student's grades and household income. College Connection is a program of White-Williams Scholars, a non-profit organization with a 208-year history of rewarding high achievement in Philadelphia's youth.

Using the School District's Core Curriculum as a general guide, this instructor will prepare a one-hour lesson each week for C2 students (roughly 20 per class) at varying levels of critical reading/writing exposure and success. Each lesson would be presented twice during weekly meetings. Subject matter should span across theater, literature, dramatics, journalism, business English, English usage, grammar and composition with an emphasis on works that can inspire and motivate these students to stay focused on their goals and aspirations. The classes will be held at the School District Administration Building, 440 N. Broad Street, between 4pm and 6:30pm on Tuesdays.

This opportunity is guaranteed to be challenging and rewarding. Salary will be paid on an hourly basis with an average time commitment of roughly five hours per week. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching with a minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Education and/or English and an innate understanding and respect for the complex needs of working with students of color from low-income households.
